Walmart announces major delivery change

Walmart is making a change to its delivery offerings.

Starting today, Walmart customers in six states – Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Nevada, South Carolina and Wisconsin – will be able to have new prescriptions and refills delivered to their homes alongside with groceries and other products.

The service will be rolled out to 44 other states by the end of January 2025.

Prescriptions will be available in as little as 30 minutes and will be accessible to more than 86% of American households, Walmart said in a statement.

“Our extensive footprint across the nation combined with our deep expertise in pharmacy uniquely positions us to make a profound impact in the communities we serve,” Kevin Host, senior vice president of Pharmacy at Walmart U.S. said in a statement. “We understand that health care is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s hyper-local. Each community has unique needs. This new offering allows us to continue serving customers while also giving more time back to our pharmacies for high-touch health services.”

The service will be offered via Walmart’s app and online. Customers can opt for same-day delivery for a specific time or on-demand and express that will allow for medications to be delivered in as little as 30 minutes. New and existing insurance plans will be applied to the transactions just as they would if the shopper were using a prescription in a store.

The company said each prescription will be delivered in HIPPA-compliant transport with tamper-evident packaging. Customers will also be able to track their orders in real time via the app or website and receive photo confirmation once the product arrives.

Walmart+ members will receive free delivery on pharmacy products; Non-Walmart+ members will pay standard delivery fee of $9.95.
