Police officer shoots man to death after chase starts near east Alabama school drop-off line

A man was shot to death Wednesday morning by police in east Alabama.

A Sardis police officer responded at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a disturbance near the drop-off line at Sardis Middle School.

When the officer arrived, the male suspect fled in a vehicle, leading the officer on a pursuit.

The chase ended on a driveway off Lawson Gap Road.

Etowah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Morgan said an altercation erupted when the man got out of the vehicle, and shots were exchanged between an officer and the suspect.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity hasn’t been released.

No officers were injured.

The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and the Jacksonville State Center for Applied Forensic Science were brought in to lead the investigation.

The incident at Sardis Middle School caused no injuries, disruptions, or danger to any students or staff, Morgan said. The incident happened in the parking lot area of the school.

School activities continued as normal.

Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office for review.
