Four people apprehended following shooting in Meriden

Four people were apprehended on Monday after fleeing a vehicle that was suspected to be involved in a shooting in Meriden that landed one person in the hospital.

Three of the four suspects were allegedly found with firearms following a foot chase that occurred after the vehicle they were in struck a police cruiser during an escape attempt, according to Sgt. Michael Boothroyd of the Meriden Police Department. None of the suspects have been identified.

Boothroyd said officers were dispatched to the area of 308 Crown St. around 2:15 p.m. on the report of a shooting and found shell casings at the scene. About 15 minutes later, police learned that a gunshot victim arrived at a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Boothroyd.

Boothroyd said authorities quickly identified a vehicle suspected to be involved in the shooting. The car was spotted around 3:15 p.m. by detectives and patrol officers in the area of Orange Street. The driver allegedly tried to flee and struck a police cruiser, according to Boothroyd.

Four people got out and ran after the vehicle became disabled. They were taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit.

According to Boothroyd, three of the suspects were allegedly armed with illegal firearms. Some of them are known to police in connection with prior allegations related to firearms.

Boothroyd said one of the firearms that was recovered was found to be stolen. Another was a ghost gun with no serial number, and the third gun had an obliterated serial number. Boothroyd said two of the guns had extended magazines.

“We would like to commend the professionalism and hard work displayed by the members of the Meriden Police Department during this incident,” Boothroyd said in a statement. “This shooting incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. and due to the hard work, knowledge, and teamwork displayed by members of this agency, four dangerous people were apprehended, and three illegal firearms were recovered within approximately one hour of this incident.”

The shooting remains under investigation.
