21-year-old woman seriously injured in hit-and-run in Meriden

A pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Meriden on Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews responded to Broad Street in the area of Charles Street at 7:50 p.m. upon receiving numerous calls reporting that a pedestrian had been struck, according to Sgt. Stanley Zajac of the Meriden Police Department.

First responders found a 21-year-old woman suffering serious head and lower body injuries, Zajac said. She was treated at the scene by firefighters and medics before being taken to Hartford Hospital.

According to Zajac, the woman was crossing Broad Street in the crosswalk at the Charles Street intersection while pushing a small cart with bottles in it. Authorities believe she crossed from the west side of the road, making it past both southbound lanes, and was about ¾ of the way across the two northbound lanes when she was struck, Zajac said.

Witnesses reported seeing a light-colored sedan traveling heading north when it struck the woman, according to Zajac. The driver slowed down after the collision and then left the area.

Police believe the vehicle could be white, light gray or silver and possibly has front right damage and a broken windshield.

Several video surveillance cameras are in the area, Zajac said. Anyone in the area with surveillance footage at their home or business has been asked to contact investigators. Witnesses and anyone with information about the vehicle involved have also been asked to contact the Meriden Police Department at 203-630-6201. Information can also be emailed to lead investigator Officer Michael Gentile at [email protected], Sgt. Christopher Griffin at [email protected] or Zajac at [email protected].
