Longhorns fall to Aggies in 5-set thriller for 1st SEC volleyball loss

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas A&M went into Gregory Gym and knocked off the rival Texas Longhorns in five sets to snap a 9-match winning streak for the Longhorns and give them their first Southeastern Conference loss.

Set scores in a wild one were 27-25, 14-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-18. It’s the first time the Aggies defeated the Longhorns since 2010.

Madisen Skinner hit .415 for the match with 23 kills and five errors in 41 attempts while Reagan Rutherford notched 13 kills with four errors in 24 attempts. For the Aggies, Logan Lednicky hit .161 but had a ton of swings to notch a match-high 23 kills. She committed 14 errors in 56 attempts. Emily Hellmuth had 15 kills and 12 errors in 41 attempts to help A&M to win victory.

The Longhorns had more attacking errors (7) than kills (6) in the fifth set while the Aggies closed the match out with 10 kills in the deciding set.

The score was tied 28 times and 14 lead changes in the match. The lead changed six times in the fifth set, which typically goes to 15 points but a team has to win by two points.

Texas (12-4, 7-1 SEC) has a little break and will resume SEC play Nov. 1 against Missouri at home. Texas A&M (14-4, 5-3)
