Piccolo’s Demonic Connections in Dragon Ball DAIMA Make So Much Sense with How Akira Toriyama Felt About the Character

With only a few episodes under its belts, Dragon Ball DAIMA has been making waves as the series has been revealing major aspects of the original story that fans never expected to find out about. Dragon Ball DAIMA marks the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Ball franchise, and it is certainly living up to the expectations of the last series that involved Akira Toriyama.

One of the major aspects that Dragon Ball DAIMA has put a special focus on is the mysterious Namekian race that is responsible for almost every major twist and turn in the franchise. Fans finally get to find out about their origins and the demonic connection that makes the past actions of characters like King Piccolo and Piccolo more understandable for fans.

It also explains why Toriyama considered Piccolo to be his favorite character and kept him underrated as a fighter for the longest time. With the current revelation in DAIMA and his character development in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, it looks like Piccolo’s time to shine is finally here.

Piccolo’s Connection To The Demon Realm

The Demon Realm was one of the oldest concepts in the Dragon Ball franchise, and while the narrative used it a lot, it eventually got sidelined as the story progressed. However, Dragon Ball DAIMA brings back the iconic concept to the storyline, but it also adds a shocking twist to it by connecting the Demon Realm to Piccolo, or more specifically, the Namekians.

Dragon Ball DAIMA revealed that the Namekians were originally a race from the Demon Realm. All of these details are revealed through Neva, the creator and guardian of the Demon Realm Dragon Balls. Their origins make a lot of sense, as Namekians were initially introduced as antagonists in the Dragon Ball narrative.

This also connects Piccolo to the Demon Realm, who was introduced as the main villain in the final saga of Dragon Ball. This revelation in a way enhances the Namekian characters in the series as it makes things clear about their origins and the way Akira Toriyama portrayed them when Dragon Ball started.

Piccolo Was Akira Toriyama’s Favorite Character

In 1995, an exclusive interview with the Dragon Ball creator was featured in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2: Story Guide which was later shared by Kazenshuu. During the interview, Toriyama was asked about his favorite character from the series, and the mangaka shocked fans by revealing that it was actually Piccolo.

Toriyama stated:

Yeah, I guess I like Piccolo the most after all. Out of all the enemies, Demon King Piccolo is the one I like most, and even after that I like Piccolo the most. I like Piccolo about the same as I like Goku.

It didn’t make a lot of sense then because Piccolo didn’t really have any major character development or growth in the series. There were other characters who essentially replaced him as a major character in the series.

But now, after finding out the origins of the Namekians and Toriyama’s plan for Piccolo’s character it makes a lot of sense that the manga creator preferred him more than characters like Vegeta and Gohan.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
