Fans of Speed have reason to celebrate! Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves hinted at a thrilling return to the franchise, contingent on Hollywood’s enthusiasm and audience demand.

Their announcement at the film’s 30th anniversary screening caught the attention of 20th Century Studios, whose president, Steve Asbell, responded enthusiastically. He stated, adding that if a compelling reason emerged, they would prioritize Speed 3.

Hollywood is brave enough. We are brave enough. We are sitting by the phone.

Asbell’s remarks came after Bullock’s playful quip about making the film a geriatric version that “won’t be fast.” Yet, both stars expressed willingness to be involved, albeit with a strong emphasis on creativity and collaboration.

Asbell noted that Bullock and Reeves would need to participate in developing the storyline. He quipped, indicating that any sequel wouldn’t be a half-hearted effort:

[Speed] is one of those last movies that we haven’t remade. And to really be a reason to come back, it’s got to be a great idea and an idea that excites (Bullock and Reeves). Because that’d be the reason to see it.

It’s obviously a really important title for us, but it’s not something we would handle lightly or just try to press them into service. They’d have to be a part of the development of that idea.

The potential direction might even mirror Twisters, introducing new characters in the Speed universe. Bullock underscored the importance of director Jan de Bont’s involvement, attributing the original film’s energy to his vision.

As she put it, “He’s the man who put the energy and the idea together.” With nostalgia and innovation in the air, could Speed 3 accelerate to the big screen? Only time will tell!

As Speed celebrated its 30th anniversary, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock reminisced about the wild stunts that made the 1994 blockbuster unforgettable. At Beyond Fest, Reeves humorously recalled, “We were a little under-informed. We were actually hitting cars. Boom! Boom! Everyone on the bus lost their mind.”

Bullock chimed in, noting she had a Santa Monica bus driver’s license but never drove in the film. “Someone was driving, and I was being careened into whatever Jan de Bont felt I needed to smash into,” she said. With talk of another sequel, Bullock expressed uncertainty about the industry’s willingness to take risks. “I don’t know what we could do that would be good enough for the audience,” she pondered.

Speed is available to watch on Starz & Apple TV.
