Austin's oldest BBQ pit opening again after 2020 fire

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After an almost four-year hiatus, Austin’s oldest pit barbecue restaurant is getting ready to open again.

In 2020, House Park Bar-B-Que burned down, destroying much of the interior of the restaurant, but the city’s oldest pit made it through, with only a little damage.

At the time of the fire, owner Matt Sullivan made a promise to his customers that he would rebuild around the pit and bring back his iconic spot.

“It survived (the pit),” Sullivan said in 2020. “It will need a little love. We will need to put new steel doors on it, but the pit did survive thank goodness.”

Sullivan even posted a sign outside the restaurant that read “We’ll be back.”

“My father bought it in 1981 right before the Memorial flood of ’81, so we have been through a couple tragedies before, if you will, here. So, we plan on bouncing back,” Matt Sullivan said back in 2020.

House Park Bar-B-Que opened originally in 1943.

What can new and old customers alike expect when the doors open?

“Need no teef to eat my beef,” said Sullivan. “We do smoke our brisket so tender that it will melt in your mouth like butter. You don’t need much teef for it.”

This story will be updated after the story airs Friday.
