Abbott Elementary has been running smoothly for four seasons and it doesn’t seem like fans are getting tired of the mockumentary sitcom either. While the show boasts an impressive 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, their recent Halloween episode proves why Quinta Brunson’s hit deserves a full score.

William Stanford Davis is one of the many reasons people love tuning into ABC Network for every new Abbott Elementary episode that airs. Davis’ Mr. Johnson is the loveable janitor at the school who has a mysterious side to his personality but also hints at a cool backstory.

During the Halloween episode, Mr. Johnson dressed up as emo Jimmy Butler, which was a nod to the time the NBA star showed up with straightened-out hair, black nail polish, as well as lip and eyebrow piercings during the 2023-24 season media day.

Mr. Johnson caught everybody off guard and certainly had a lot of NBA fanatics smiling with all 32 (teeth) on display. This also is an ode to Davis’ character’s love for sports. Fans praised the writers for the incredible idea of suiting Mr. Johnson as Jimmy Butler:

In the show, Mr. Johnson claims to have had a history in the Olympics while also suggesting that he may have dealt with the mafia at some point. Even though he showed up in Heat gear, Mr. Johnson often expresses his love for the Philadelphia 76ers on the show. Philadelphia is where the school is located in Abbott Elementary.

Basketball fans are probably aware of Jimmy Butler’s love for trolling and trash talk. According to Screenrant, Butler decided to appear in his “emotional state” on purpose just so the media would use it as his headshot for nationally televised games.

However, in the Starting 5 documentary series, Butler revealed that it was his children’s nanny who inspired the idea. The Miami Heat All-Star claimed that they came up with the idea after his nanny told him about “emo night” an event where people get together to celebrate emo-culture and music from the early 2000s.

Well, it was certainly Butler’s best media day appearance to date. Not only did it inspire Quinta Brunson and her incredibly talented writers but also several kids and adults around the world to dress as himself on Halloween.

Abbott Elementary can be streamed on ABC.
