CT families displaced after outdoor blaze catches building on fire

Three families were displaced after a building fire in New London on Sunday morning.

The New London Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire on Montauk Avenue around 11:21 a.m. on Sunday, according to Chief Vernon Skau.

“The on-duty Battalion Chief declared a working fire, prompting a response from all on-duty companies in New London, as well as assistance from the Subbase Fire Department and a ladder truck from the Waterford Fire Department,” Skau said.

According to Skau, the fire originated outside the building and extended into the kitchen of a first-floor apartment.

“Thanks to the prompt action of the New London firefighters, the fire was contained to the initial area, preventing further spread,” Skau said. “The home sustained moderate fire damage, making it uninhabitable for the residents.”

No injuries were reported, according to Skau.

The American Red Cross is assisting in relocating three families, totaling nine individuals, Skau said.

The New London Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Skau.
