AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Atlantic Basin averages 14 named storms per season, with one to three of those named storms developing in November.
The Gulf of Mexico is an unfavorable environment for tropical development during the hurricane season’s later part, because of strong cold fronts, harsh upper-level winds and cooling sea surface temperatures.
The majority of development happens in the Western Caribbean, with steering flow into the Antilles.
Some of the most memorable tropical systems include Hurricane Lenny, which rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall in the Virgin Islands. In the United States, Hurricane Kate made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on the Florida Panhandle back in 1985.
A tropical system has never before made landfall in Texas during the month of November.
