NFL teammates from Alabama, Auburn get into sideline dustup

Seattle Seahawks strongside linebacker Derick Hall and defensive end Jarran Reed were separated on the sideline by teammates after their argument on the field had been separated by their opponents on Sunday.

Reed, a former Alabama standout, and Hall, a former Auburn standout, were facemask-to-facemask on the field in the second quarter after Hall got a roughing-the-passer penalty on a third-and-7 incompletion by Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

“He just came up to me talking about, ‘I love you,’ and I told him, ‘I love you’ back,” Hall said in the locker room after the game. “In the heat of the moment, like I said, things happen, but, like I said, we both love the game, both love each other and when it’s in the moment, you can’t really say who’s going to say or do what. But we told each other we love each other.

“He wants me to play smart. He knows I’m a guy that can help us, and, like I said, he’s the leader of our unit, and so there’s no bad blood. We play together, we love each other, so we’ll be back at it next Sunday.”

The penalty moved Buffalo to the Seattle 12-yard line. After Bills offensive tackles Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown broke up the argument, Buffalo scored a touchdown two snaps later to take a 14-3 lead with 18 seconds remaining in the first half.

Reed, a nine-year veteran, and Hall, a second-year player, got even more confrontational on the sideline, which is when teammates intervened to pull them away from each other.

“There was some frustration there,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said during his postgame press conference. “Look, our guys are connected, and they have each other’s backs. But they are emotional. There’s going to be flareups and stuff, so I’m not – seemed like it calmed down.

“But it wasn’t a smart penalty. That’s not how we train our guys to attack quarterbacks, and so that wasn’t a smart move.”

Later, TV coverage of the game showed Reed and Hall together again on the sideline, but this time they were talking without the physical interaction or nose-to-nose confrontation.

Buffalo went on to a 31-10 victory over Seattle.
