Following the story of real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on The Dating Game, the film received positive reviews from critics for Kendrick’s direction and the exploration of themes like systemic misogyny.
Kendrick has been vocal about her struggles in dysfunctional relationships in the past, revealing that she was in an abusive relationship for seven years at the time of Alice, Darling’s release. She recently opened up more about her experiences while in the relationship and mentioned that there were times when she was made to feel like the abuser.
Anna Kendrick’s Ex Made Her Feel Like She Was The Abuser In The Relationship
Anna Kendrick is best known for her roles in Pitch Perfect, A Simple Favor, and Up In The Air, the latter of which got her an Oscar nomination. She has also been a part of blockbuster scale films like the Twilight series, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and The Accountant, and recently turned director with Woman of the Hour.
Kendrick has been vocal about her disturbing past relationship, claiming that she was in an abusive relationship for seven years. The actress has reportedly spoken about how she felt unsafe in her own home while living with her boyfriend at the time and she could not define it as an abusive relationship because it did not look like a typical one (via People).
In a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kendrick mentioned that there were times when her partner made her feel like she was the abusive one, and even she believed it. She said,
He told me one day I was terrorizing him because I was crying and I couldn’t pretend that things were fine anymore….Sometimes it was so emotional, like, ‘Anna, I’m begging you. You’re ruining everything’. It was so real for him.
Kendrick mentioned that the fact that her partner believed that he was the victim made her feel unsure about her own situation in the relationship as she felt that she would see it if he was faking it.
Anna Kendrick Told Her Agents She Could Not Work For A While
Anna Kendrick opened up about her abusive relationship with an ex during the release of Alice, Daring, which also dealt with similar themes. The actress told People magazine that the script came to her when she had just gotten out of that relationship and she did not want anyone to tell her not to do it.
Kendrick told The Independent that she had told her agents that she could not perform for a while and was not interested in the usual comedy films she was known for.
I think what was happening at that time was I was being forced into a place of performance and dishonesty in my private life. I just couldn’t spend another second breathing dishonest air.
Kendrick also revealed that she revealed everything to a plumber who had visited her home and asked her how she was doing.
