Alabama NFL roundup: Josh Jacobs carries the load for the Packers

When Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love left Sunday’s game with a groin injury with 11:41 left in the third quarter, Packers running back Josh Jacobs had 39 yards and one touchdown on 12 rushing attempts. Jacobs finished with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries as Green Bay defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-27 on Sunday.

After the Jaguars took a 17-13 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter, Jacobs carried the football on the first four snaps of the Packers’ next possession, and he capped the series with a 38-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The TD run was Jacobs’ longest run from scrimmage this season.

Jacobs’ second 100-yard rushing game of the 2024 season was the 19th of his career.

Jacobs entered the contest with one rushing touchdown for the Packers this season. He scored the first points of Sunday’s game on a 3-yard run with 11:31 left in the first half.

Jacobs was among the 45 former Alabama players who got on the field on the eighth Sunday of the NFL’s 105th season.

Four other former Alabama players were involved in the Green Bay-Jacksonville game:

· Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones dressed for the game but did not play.

· Xavier McKinney started at safety for the Packers. McKinney made six tackles and intercepted a pass. McKinney got his NFL-leading sixth interception when he picked off Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence at the Jaguars 28-yard line with 12:56 left in the first half. The interception set up the first touchdown of the game.

· Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson dressed for the game but did not play. Robinson left last week’s game because of a concussion.

· Jaguars running back Keilan Robinson is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

In the other Sunday games:

Philadelphia Eagles 37, Cincinnati Bengals 17

· Bengals safety Jordan Battle made one tackle on special teams.

· Bengals wide receiver Jermaine Burton had a 41-yard reception. The reception was the second of the rookie’s career. The first gained 47 yards on Sept. 15.

· Landon Dickerson started at left guard for the Eagles.

· Jalen Hurts started at quarterback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 16-of-20 passes for 236 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran 10 times for 37 yards and three touchdowns. Hurts’ 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith with 2:43 left in the third quarter broke a 17-17 tie. Hurts scored on a pair of 1-yard quarterback sneaks and a 7-yard run. Hurts’ performance made him the first player in NFL history with consecutive games with multiple rushing touchdowns and a passing-efficiency rating higher than 100.

· Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks was designated as a game-day inactive.

· DeVonta Smith started at wide receiver for the Eagles. Smith had six receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown. Smith caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts to break a 17-17 tie with 2:43 left in the third quarter.

· Tyler Steen started at right guard for the Eagles. Steen’s first start of the 2024 season was the second of his career.

· Eagles defensive tackle Byron Young is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Cleveland Browns 29, Baltimore Ravens 24

· Jalyn Armour-Davis (St. Paul’s Episcopal) started at cornerback for the Ravens. Armour-Davis made five tackles in his return from a four-game stay on injured reserve.

· Browns cornerback Tony Brown made one tackle on special teams.

· Browns guard Javion Cohen (Central-Phenix City) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Ravens guard Darrian Dalcourt is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns running back Jerome Ford was designated as a game-day inactive. A hamstring injury sidelined Ford.

· Derrick Henry started at running back for the Ravens. Henry ran for 73 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries and caught a 4-yard pass. Henry scored on a 2-yard run as Baltimore took a 24-23 lead with 2:36 left to play. Henry became the first player in NFL history to score a touchdown in each of his first eight games with a team. Henry joined the Ravens in the offseason as a free agent after playing eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

· Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Hoover) was designated as a game-day inactive. A knee injury kept Humphrey out of the lineup.

· Eddie Jackson started at safety for the Ravens. Jackson tied for the team lead with 10 tackles and broke up one pass.

· Jerry Jeudy started at wide receiver for the Browns. Jeudy had five receptions for 79 yards.

· Browns tight end Cameron Latu is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Dalvin Tomlinson started at defensive tackle for the Browns. Tomlinson made one tackle.

· Browns offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. was designated as a game-day inactive. A knee injury kept Wills out of the lineup.

Detroit Lions 52, Tennessee Titans 14

· Terrion Arnold started at cornerback for the Lions. Arnold made seven tackles and broke up one pass.

· Brian Branch started at safety for the Lions. Branch made six tackles and registered one quarterback hit.

· Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 127 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries and caught a 6-yard pass. The third 100-yard rushing game of Gibbs’ career included his longest NFL run – a 70-yard touchdown as Detroit took a 14-7 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter.

· J.C. Latham started at left offensive tackle for the Titans.

· Calvin Ridley started at wide receiver for the Titans. Ridley had 10 receptions for 143 yards. He also lost a fumble. In his 16th 100-yard receiving game, Ridley tied his career high for receptions. He also had 10 receptions for the Atlanta Falcons in a 31-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Dec. 20, 2020.

· Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances.

Houston Texans 23, Indianapolis Colts 20

· Will Anderson Jr. started at defensive end for the Texans. Anderson tied for the team lead with seven tackles, recorded one sack and recovered a fumble on the final snap of the game. Anderson exceeded his rookie total of seven sacks by reaching 7.5 for the 2024 season.

· Colts defensive tackle Raekwon Davis did not record any stats.

· Texans linebacker Christian Harris is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Colts safety Ronnie Harrison is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Ryan Kelly started at center for the Colts.

· Texans wide receiver John Metchie III had three receptions for 29 yards.

· Texans linebacker Henry To’oTo’o was designated as a game-day inactive. A concussion kept To’oTo’o out of the lineup.

Arizona Cardinals 28, Miami Dolphins 27

· Lester Cotton (Central-Tuscaloosa) did not record any stats.

· Da’Shawn Hand started at defensive tackle for the Dolphins. Hand made four tackles.

· Tua Tagovailoa started at quarterback for the Dolphins. Tagovailoa completed 28-of-38 passes for 234 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran three times for 13 yards in his first game since Sept. 12. A concussion sidelined Tagovailoa for four contests. Tagovailoa’s TD pass was a 12-yard toss to running back De’Von Achane as Miami took a 20-10 lead with 8:31 left in the third quarter. On the Dolphins’ next possession, Tagovailoa couldn’t handle a snap and ended up having to knock the loose football out of the end zone for a safety.

· Jaylen Waddle started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Waddle had four receptions for 45 yards.

· Cardinals offensive tackle Jonah Williams is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Mack Wilson (Carver-Montgomery) started at inside linebacker for the Cardinals. Wilson made four tackles.

New England Patriots 25, New York Jets 22

· Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker returned a kickoff 17 yards.

· Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore is on the non-football illness list and not eligible to play.

· Anfernee Jennings (Dadeville) started at linebacker for the Patriots. Jennings made six tackles and registered on quarterback hit.

· Jets safety Jaylen Key (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley (Theodore) dressed but did not play because of a neck injury.

· Quinnen Williams (Wenonah) started at defensive tackle for the Jets. Williams made three tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks.

Atlanta Falcons 31, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26

· Buccaneers safety Marcus Banks is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers outside linebacker Chris Braswell did not record any stats.

· Falcons linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn High) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Falcons safety DeMarcco Hellams is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Falcons running back Jase McClellan was designated as a game-day inactive.

Los Angeles Chargers 26, New Orleans Saints 8

· Bradley Bozeman (Handley) started at center for the Chargers.

· Chargers defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Chargers offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Ga’Quincy “Kool-Aid” McKinstry (Pinson Valley) started at cornerback for the Saints. McKinstry made four tackles on defense, broke up one pass and had one tackle on special teams in his second NFL start.

· Chargers punter JK Scott averaged 57.3 yards on six punts, with a 52.3-yard net. Scott was charged with a fumble. He couldn’t handle an off-target snap with Los Angeles punting from its 22-yard line in the first quarter. Scott managed to pick up the football, but he fumbled while being tackled and the ball skidded out of the end zone for a safety. Scott had a 59-yard punt returned 3 yards to the New Orleans 21-yard line, a 47-yarder for a fair catch at the New Orleans 16, a 63-yarder returned 9 yards to the New Orleans 13, a 54-yarder for a fair catch at the New Orleans 5, a 54-yarder returned for no gain at the New Orleans 30and a 67-yarder returned 18 yards to the New Orleans 46.

Buffalo Bills 31, Seattle Seahawks 10

· Amari Cooper started at wide receiver for the Bills. Cooper had a 3-yard reception.

· Bills safety Kareem Jackson is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe made a career-high seven tackles and recorded his first NFL interception. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen had not thrown an interception in the first seven games this season, but he was picked off by Jobe, whose 33-yard return put Seattle at the Bills 7-yard line with 6:43 left in the first half. The Seahawks did not capitalize on Jobe’s interceptions as they were stopped on downs at the Buffalo 1. Seattle elevated Jobe from its practice squad to make him eligible to play.

· Jarran Reed started at defensive end for the Seahawks. Reed made one tackle.

· Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers in on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Denver Broncos 28, Carolina Panthers 14

· LaBryan Ray (James Clemens) started at defensive end for the Panthers. Ray made three tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

· A’Shawn Robinson started at defensive end for the Panthers. Robinson made five tackles and recorded both of Carolina’s sacks. In his ninth NFL season, Robinson had compiled seven sacks in 116 regular-season games. Sunday was his first game with two sacks.

· Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders is on the physically-unable-to-perform list and not eligible to play.

· Patrick Surtain II started at cornerback for the Broncos. Surtain made one tackle for loss and intercepted one pass. Surtain’s third interception of the season and third of his career came when he picked off Carolina quarterback Bryce Young and returned it 28 yards to the Denver 39-yard with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

· Broncos cornerback Levi Wallace made two tackles.

· Bryce Young started at quarterback for Panthers. Young completed 24-of-37 passes for 224 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and ran three times for 6 yards. Carolina benched Young after he started the first two games of the season. But when Andy Dalton sustained a thumb injury in a traffic accident on Tuesday, Young returned to the starting lineup. He threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Xavier Leggette for the first points of the game with 7:12 to play in the first quarter and had a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Coker with 18 seconds remaining.

Kansas City Chiefs 27, Las Vegas Raiders 20

· Chiefs tight end Irv Smith Jr. is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Washington Commanders 18, Chicago Bears 15

· Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Commanders defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis made two tackles.

· Daron Payne (Shades Valley) started at defensive tackle for the Commanders. Payne made four tackles and recorded one sack for a 15-yard loss.

· Brian Robinson Jr. (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa) started at running back for the Commanders. Robinson ran for 65 yards on 16 carries and caught an 11-yard pass.

San Francisco 49ers 30, Dallas Cowboys 24

· Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs made five tackles and broke up one pass.

Week 8 started on Thursday night, when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Minnesota Vikings 30-20.

Week 8 concludes on Monday, when the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers square off at 7:15 p.m. CDT at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.
