‘I can vaguely recall one ill-advised late night together’

Demi Moore and Rob Lowe are counted among the best stars that came out from the Brat Pack genre of films in the 1980s. Brat Pack referred to a group of young actors who co-starred in many coming-of-age films of that time. While Moore and Lowe were a hit on-screen pair after co-starring in St. Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night, they also “had a thing” off-screen.

Demi Moore has earlier claimed in her memoir Inside Out that her memories with Rob Lowe are clouded due to her past drug addiction. But she thanked the Perfect Strangers actor for beautifully talking about their brief relationship in his memoir Stories I Only Tell My Friends.

Recently, Rob Lowe appeared on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast and shared numerous tidbits about his career. The interview reached an interesting moment when the host asked if the entire cast of St. Elmo’s Fire dated each other. The Parks and Recreation star jokingly replied that a “big s*x o*gy” took place behind the scenes of St. Elmo’s Fire.

Besides Lowe and Moore, St. Elmo’s Fire also starred Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Andie MacDowell, Mare Winningham, and Andrew McCarthy. Lowe, who played Billy in the film, clarified that he had a brief fling with the Ghost star before she got engaged to Emilio Estevez.

Sadly, Demi Moore confessed in her memoir that she barely remembers anything about this off-screen bond as she was suffering from addiction issues in her 20s. But referring to the portrayal of their “hot-and-heavy romance” in Rob Lowe’s memoir, she thanked the 60-year-old actor for his descriptions of their youth (via Entertainment Weekly).

Memory — especially memory clouded by drugs — is a funny thing. In his own memoir, Rob suggests that we had some kind of hot-and-heavy romance; I can vaguely recall one ill-advised late night together, but I’m grateful to him for the complimentary descriptions of our youth.

However, St. Elmo’s Fire was never even meant to be a matchmaker as Demi Moore’s wedding with Emilio Estevez was also called off in 1986. Although they were engaged and a wedding date was also planned, it did not work out she got married to Bruce Willis a year later.

The Emmy-nominated actor admitted to Kelly Ripa that his fling with Moore did not impact their friendship as “hookups are inevitable” if young twentysomething men and women” are put together. Despite the brief history, Rob Lowe attended Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ wedding. He added that he had never attended such a grand wedding before that in his life.

In the conversation with Kelly Ripa, Rob Lowe made the fans go mad after confessing that he is still working with Demi Moore on a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel. Earlier this year, the father-to-2 stated to Entertainment Weekly that he “had a couple of sit-down meetings” regarding the sequel’s story.

Rob Lowe said that they are proceeding slowly on the sequel to get hold of the ideal writer and the story. Nevertheless, he confirmed that almost everybody is on board.

We’re very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo’s Fire sequel. We’re on a text thread. She has a pseudonym that she goes by, which I can’t say, because then it wouldn’t be a pseudonym. It’s going a little more slowly than I would have liked. But that’s a good thing because we’re trying to find the right writer and the right story. But all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody is excited.

According to Deadline, the legacy sequel was planned after the OG cast reunited for McCarthy’s documentary Brats earlier this year. The fans would be undoubtedly excited to see their favorite Brat Pack on-screen after so many years. Despite poor critical reception, St. Elmo’s Fire was a major hit and it will be intriguing to see if the sequel can repeat the success.

St. Elmo’s Fire can be rented on Apple TV+.
