During one conversation, Tartan Army fan Sir Rod told Jardine how he would love to own a Scotland international cap.

When the former defender, who died aged 65 in 2014, said he would like to own a gold disc, the pair agreed to a swap deal.

Sir Rod, 79, arranged for a framed disc to be given to Jardine after he achieved more than £250,000 worth of sales of his sixth solo album Atlantic Crossing, which was released in 1975.

It was valued by Antiques Roadshow expert Raj Bisram at between £1,500 and £2,500 after Jardine’s widow Shona brought it along when the BBC show visited Thirlestane Castle in the Borders.

On Sunday night’s episode of the long-running show, Shona Jardine said: “Sandy Jardine is my husband and he died 10 years ago.

“Many years ago he and Kenny Dalglish were very close friends with Rod Stewart.

“They were out having a carry on, as we do in Scotland, and Rod Stewart said, ‘You know I would love to have a Scottish cap Sandy’. Sandy said ‘Well I would like to have a gold disc’.

“They did a swap. Sandy got this and Rod Stewart got a Scotland cap.”

A plaque on the gold disc is inscribed with the message: “Presented to Sandy Jardine to recognise the sale, in the United Kingdom, of more than £250,000 worth of the Warner Bros long playing record album ‘Atlantic Crossing’.”

Bisram said: “As we know Rod Stewart is a crazy football fan and your husband is a Scottish legend.

“This is a gold disc of Atlantic Crossing. I think it’s a great story and I think this is worth at least £1,500 to £2,500 and it could be more. It’s a great thing.”

Despite the valuation, Mrs Jardine said she intends to keep the disc for her relatives to enjoy.

She added: “I think my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren when they come will appreciate this. I hope they do.”

Edinburgh-born Jardine began his career with Rangers in 1965 and went on to make over 600 appearances for the Ibrox side.
