Man United transfer news: Danny Welbeck comments on Old Trafford return speculation

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck comments on speculation that suggested that he was an option for Manchester United last summer.

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck has claimed that speculation regarding a potential return to Manchester United is “irrelevant”.

Despite being at the age of 33, Welbeck is currently enjoying one of his best campaigns as a Premier League player.

A total of six goals and two assists have been contributed from 11 appearances in the top flight, having a direct effect in the final third during as many as seven games.

Welbeck has already equalled his best return in terms of goals for more than a decade, his nine strikes in 2013-14 representing his best effort.

That came in the colours of Man United and it was recently claimed that the Red Devils held a certain level of interest in the veteran frontman during the summer transfer window.

‘Man United talk will always be there’

Erik ten Hag – who has now left Old Trafford – was allegedly behind Welbeck entering conversations behind the scenes at the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking to The Times, the former England international has suggested that it is now pointless discussing any reported interest from his former employers.

Welbeck said: “It’s speculation and there’s always that link for me because I’ve been at the club.

“As I said, I’m just focusing on what I can control myself and all the other stuff is pretty irrelevant.”

During his stint with United having initially come through the academy setup, Welbeck contributed 29 goals and 17 assists from his 142 appearances in all competitions.

Future now at Brighton?

As it stands, Welbeck holds a contract at the Amex Stadium until the end of the 2025-26 campaign, effectively giving him just over 18 months to secure an extension to his deal.

The major positive from everyone’s perspective is Welbeck staying fit. He has played at least 73 minutes in every Premier League fixture this season.

Although Brighton tend to favour showcasing younger talent and players with potential in their ranks, Welbeck is a key part of the club both on and off the pitch.

With Brighton having progressed into a club where qualification for Europe for a second time is a clear possibility, the Amex Stadium could be where Welbeck sees his future.
