Matt Reeves Seemingly Confirms Disturbing Oedipus Complex Theory in The Penguin

Yeah. There is a theory where you are se*ually attracted to your mother. There is even a term for that called “Oedipus Complex,” and what Matt Reeves said about Colin Farrell’s The Penguin might just prove our theory.

Sigmund Freud gave a banger of a theory, and there is an equally weird tale associated with this complex. But, for all we know, the Penguin might just be attracted to his mother in the TV series, and Matt Reeves might have just confirmed it.

Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobb Is a Mama’s Boy

Not in any weird way but throughout the series, a heavy emphasis on Francis Cobb (Oswald Cobb’s mother) has been given. The actress has been shown in the spotlight several times and has become a crucial plot point in the 7 episodes that have aired.

Well, there are instances in The Penguin where Oswald Cobb is dancing with his mother in their living room. Cobb taking care of his mother, simply added a layer to his negative perception and gave the Penguin a second story of redemption and love.

However, several fans have pointed out that the vibe between Oz Cobb and her mother often feels odd. The people have even stated that their on-screen chemistry feels less like mother and son and more like something else (*cough* House of the Dragon).

Well, it seems that in a recent interview, The Batman director Matt Reeves has given something away to the world. A disturbing piece of statement said by Reeves might just confirm what fans had been fearing all along… the Penguin has the Oedipus Complex.

Matt Reeves Might Have Just Confirmed The Theory

Oswald Cobb aka the Penguin wants power above all else. To control Gotham City after Carmine Falcone’s death is a big task, but the Penguin is ready for it. However, how did Cobb become obsessed with power?

In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, legendary actor Andy Serkis (who played Alfred in The Batman) sat down for a chat with Matt Reeves. Since The Penguin is a part of the Reevesverse, Serkis asked the director about Cobb’s dire need for power.

Not that anything he’s done is forgivable, but you can indulge to a degree. But he takes things to a place that’s very unsettling. So, the question was, where do those wounds come from?

Reeves further continued,

It was Lauren [LeFranc, the writer]’s idea that it came from his mother. She pitched that relationship. And he and Deirdre O’Connell have such incredible chemistry together. They seem to be dancing together, almost less like mother and child and more like… ‘What’s going on here?’

Matt Reeves ended his statements by saying that Lauren LeFranc took the relationship dynamic between Cobb and his mother to a very dark place. However, the director revealed that it is a very “special” relationship, after all.

Although this could mean many things, one of the theories is that Oswald Cobb suffers from Oedipus Complex and thus, the need for power. Complex or not, The Penguin currently stands at an impressive rating of 8.8/10 on IMDB and a whopping 94% on Rotte Tomoates.

The iconic show is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
