Thor and Loki Battle Again in Twilight of Gods and It is Screaming God of War Vibe to Fans

After Blood of Zeus decided to adapt Greek Mythology with a completely new twist, its take on Norse Mythology seems like it’s treading familiar ground, perhaps taking inspiration from a few popular video games, or so the plot of the show suggests.

Twilight of the Gods is the latest offering by Zack Snyder, following a young woman on a quest for revenge against the gods, specifically, Thor. The plot of the show might be reminiscent of the original God of War, which similarly focused on one mortal’s roaring rampage of revenge on the gods. However, there seems to be a little more to the story that might be becoming a familiar trope for Zack Snyder’s works.

From what can be pieced together from the trailer of the show, it seems that the plot might have more in common with Zack Snyder‘s other Netflix IP, Rebel Moon. The protagonist of the show, Sigrid, assembles a slew of warriors to fight the gods, leading a rebellion against their tyranny.

Fans are convinced that the show might be taking a few cues from the God of War franchise, which also began dabbling in Norse Mythology with a plotline in its initial games. The animation style that the story bosts also has hints of the works of Genndy Tartakovsky, who has delivered such critically acclaimed series as Primal and Samurai Jack.

Twilight of the Gods is a series that wants to put a new spin on Norse Mythology, albeit with a tried and tested plot. On paper, the series seems to be a simple action-adventure fantasy show, albeit aimed at adults.

Zack Snyder’s producing partner Deborah Snyder revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that while Netflix had a few notes on the initial pitch, they were keen on Snyder being in the driver’s seat for this one. He said:

We pitched them an outline; they had a few notes but they let us have free rein. They had no guardrails, no limitations.

The producer also revealed that they particularly looked into animation for how freeing it can be, given that it would allow the production to express itself more artistically, rather than in a live-action setting, where the creators might find themselves hindered and limited.

Twilight of the Gods hits Netflix on September 19, 2024.
