Our favorite actress and comedienne Maya Rudolph arrived at the 2024 Emmys on Sunday night wearing a witchy pastel concoction from Chloé. Her four nominations across four very different categories this year offered proof of her range: consider her outstanding original music and lyrics nod for her Mother’s Day Monologue when she hosted Saturday Night Live earlier this year, which also garnered her a nomination for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series. Then there’s her outstanding character voice-over performance nomination for her work as Connie the Hormone Monstress in Big Mouth, which she won; and let’s not forget her nod for outstanding lead actress in a comedy for her role as Molly Novak in Apple TV+’s Loot.
Because of the varied nature of her nominations, with some awards presented during the prime-time show and others during last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony, Rudolph had to plan a trousseau of sorts. “We feel like there’s a through line; we approached it holistically and saw it as an overall story,” she said of the process of putting her looks for the week together along with her stylist Rebecca Grice. “The same lady went to all three events—she’s confident, romantic, and Stevie Nicks-adjacent.” Earlier in the week, she wore a very witchy black sparkly Balenciaga gown, as well as a different Chloé gown (look 14 from the fall 2024 collection, if you’re curious). “I’ve been obsessed with Chloé’s collection since the minute it walked and I’m a huge fan of Chemena Kamali’s creative vision,” Rudolph noted. “Chloé has been on me and my stylist Rebecca’s wish list of designers to collaborate with, so this is a dream come true.” In a very life-reflecting-art turn of events, new Chloé has also become a favorite of Vice President Kamala Harris, who has worn Kamali’s smart suits twice on the campaign trail.
After decades of red carpet appearances, Rudolph seems to have the “getting-ready” part down to a science at this point, thanks in part to her team: Molly Stern her makeup artist, John D her hair hairstylist, and Ashlie Johnson, who does her nails. It wasn’t always this way. “I don’t remember my first red carpet experience,” the actress recalled. “There are a lot of late-’90s and early 2000s moments that I remember, and in those days we were doing our own hair and makeup and dressing ourselves.” The team is also important for the overall vibes while getting ready. “We all take turns DJ-ing here,” she explained. “John was in charge today; but overall, we’re all in agreement that Beyoncé must be present at all times.” And what’s the last thing she does before stepping on the red carpet? “Check my teeth.” That’s good advice for us all.
