Blue Jays’ Varsho planning to have shoulder surgery

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho has been shut down for the season with a shoulder injury.

Varsho was moved to the 10-day IL on Tuesday and told Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae that he is planning to have shoulder surgery.

“There’s a rotator cuff issue at the front of my shoulder that’s been bugging me,” Varsho told Mae, adding that he met with renowned Tommy John specialist Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Monday.

Varsho began the season in left field but became Toronto’s primary centerfielder after Kevin Kiermaier was traded to the Dodgers. He leads all outfielders with a combined 28 defensive runs saved this season.

At the plate, Varsho hit .214/.293/.407 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs in 136 games.
