Steven Knight’s journey with Peaky Blinders has been marked by both critical acclaim and unexpected twists, but none more amusing than his initial misconception about Game of Thrones. As per reports from Variety, during a recent Royal Television Society conference, Knight shared a humorous incident that highlighted his initial misunderstanding of the HBO fantasy epic.

Despite Game of Thrones being widely recognized for its mature themes, including political intrigue and complex adult storylines, Knight initially believed it was a “kid’s show.” This amusing misconception stemmed from his son’s fascination with the series, which led him to buy a DVD boxset under the assumption that dragons and fantasy elements equated to family-friendly content.

The realization that the show was far more adult-oriented came as Knight began casting for Peaky Blinders. When Aidan Gillen, who is known for his role as Petyr Baelish in Game of Thrones, was suggested for a role in Peaky Blinders, Knight’s response was filled with surprise. “What are you talking about? It’s a kid’s show!” he exclaimed, highlighting his genuine shock upon learning about the true nature of the series.

Aidan Gillen’s transition from Game of Thrones to Peaky Blinders is a testament to the actor’s versatility and range. In the acclaimed HBO show, Gillen portrayed the scheming and enigmatic Petyr Baelish, a character known for his manipulative nature and complex motivations. His role as Littlefinger became one of the show’s most memorable and influential characters, contributing significantly to the series’ intricate political landscape.

In Peaky Blinders, Gillen essayed the role of Aberama Gold, a character whose rugged demeanor and intense presence provided a stark contrast to his Game of Thrones persona. Aberama Gold, a Romani gang leader, brought a new dimension to the series, adding depth to the narrative with his own brand of charisma and complexity. Gillen’s portrayal in the show was marked by his ability to convey both strength and vulnerability, enriching the show’s already vibrant character landscape.

The casting of Gillen in Peaky Blinders was a strategic decision that leveraged his previous experience while adding a fresh dynamic to the series. Knight’s choice to bring Gillen on board, despite his initial misunderstanding of Game of Thrones, ultimately benefited the series by introducing a seasoned actor who elevated the show’s narrative and character interactions.

You can watch Peaky Blinders on Netflix, and Game of Thrones on HBO MAX.
