Auburn football injury update: Latest from Hugh Freeze on Champ Anthony, others

Despite the loss, Auburn didn’t have much attrition in its Week 4 matchup with Arkansas, outside of what looked to be a serious leg injury for defensive back Champ Anthony.

When speaking to reporters Monday, Freeze said Anthony had a successful surgery and is in good spirits. He didn’t give any further specifics on the injury.

The only players who missed the game for Auburn were kicker Alex McPherson, tight end Brandon Frazier and corner Tyler Scott.

Scott is out for the season with an ACL injury suffered during summer workouts and Frazier broke his foot in Week 4, but McPherson was warming up before the Arkansas game as he continues to recover from a gastrointestinal illness that forced him to miss the start of the season.

Freeze said he “leaves it up to the doctors,” when asked about a possible timetable for McPherson’s return, but said that McPherson is kicking “some” in practice.

“I don’t think he’s been out there kicking those 50 and 60 yarders like he’s capable of doing last year, but he’s definitely getting closer,” Freeze said.

Freshman Town McGough has been kicking in McPherson’s place through the first four weeks and has only missed one field goal, a 61-yard attempt in Week 2.
