Senators’ Ridly Greig exits game vs. Maple Leafs with upper-body injury

Ottawa Senators centre Ridly Greig exited Tuesday’s pre-season game against the Maple Leafs with an upper-body injury after being taken down to the ice by Toronto’s Pontus Holmberg.

Near the end of the first period, the 22-year-old got taken down by Holmberg as the two were skating out of Ottawa’s zone. It resulted in a penalty for the Leafs winger, but a trip to the dressing room for Greig, with the team later announcing that he would not return.

Holmberg later fought Ottawa forward Cole Reinhardt.

The Lethbridge, Alta., native is projected to play a middle-six role for the Senators this season. As of now, the severity of the injury is unclear.

Greig was drafted 28th overall by the Senators in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Since joining Ottawa, he has recorded 15 goals and 20 assists in 92 career games.

The Senators begin the 2024-25 NHL season on Oct. 10 against the Florida Panthers.
