With 11:30 remaining in Thursday night’s game against the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs got off the turf at MetLife Stadium and walked straight to the locker room.
The former Alabama standout missed only one defensive snap, though, and on the next New York possession, he broke up a fourth-down pass to rookie star Malik Nabers with 3:21 to play to help Dallas hold on for a 20-15 victory over New York.
The Giants regained possession at their 41-yard line with 28 seconds to play. Without Nabers, who was being evaluated for a concussion after the fourth-down play, New York quarterback Daniel Jones got off two incompletions before being intercepted by practice-squad elevation Amani Oruwariye with five seconds remaining.
New York scored five times and Dallas scored four times. But the Giants’ scores were all field goals by Greg Joseph. In addition to field goals of 40 and 60 yards by Brandon Aubrey, the Cowboys had two touchdown passes by quarterback Dak Prescott, including a 55-yarder to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Lamb had seven receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown. Nabers had 12 receptions for 115 yards.
Diggs also made two tackles in the game. He left the game because of cramping and got a quick IV before returning to the field. Diggs lost an interception because of an offside penalty against Dallas.
In addition to Diggs, five other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Dallas-New York game:
· Cor’Dale Flott (Saraland) started at cornerback for the Giants. Flott made four tackles and broke up two passes.
· Cowboys defensive end Carl Lawson (Auburn) did not record any stats. Dallas elevated Lawson from its practice squad to make him eligible to play on Thursday night.
· Giants offensive tackle Evan Neal (Alabama) dressed for the game but did not play.
· Rakeem Nunez-Roches (Central-Phenix City) started at defensive tackle for the Giants. Nunez-Roches made two tackles.
· Darius Slayton (Auburn) started at wide receiver for the Giants. Slayton had three receptions for 56 yards. Slayton’s participation status for the game was listed as questionable because of a thumb injury.
· Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Cowboys. Tolbert had three receptions for 24 yards.
· Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
Dallas (2-2) plays the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7:20 p.m. Oct. 6 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. New York (1-3) plays the Seattle Seahawks at 3:25 p.m. Oct. 6 at Lumen Field in Seattle.
