Coyote bites CT hiker during ‘highly unusual’ occurrence on trail in Southington

Coyote bites CT hiker during ‘highly unusual’ occurrence on trail in Southington

A woman was bitten by a coyote while hiking in Southington this week.

The incident occurred as the woman was hiking alone on Tuesday on the Metacomet Trail, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

A spokesperson for DEEP said the agency was notified of the bite on Wednesday and has been in contact with local authorities as well as the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, which manages the trail. DEEP continues to monitor the situation.

“Coyotes rarely display aggression toward humans, which makes this a highly unusual occurrence,” the spokesperson said.

Anyone who sees a coyote showing “unusual or aggressive behavior” in the Southington portion of the Metacomet Trail has been asked to call DEEP’s emergency dispatch line at 860-424-3333.
