The idea of playing anywhere was truly fascinating and major gaming companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft had their respective attempts in that arena. Through mobile games, handheld devices, remote players, and whatnot, Microsoft has the edge thanks to cloud gaming.

Sony introduced a new handheld remote player accessory for the PS5 called the PlayStation Portal, and not everyone was convinced to grab one right out of the bat. It is not a traditional handheld device, nor is it a spiritual successor to the PlayStation Portable or the Vita; this device will only stream the content from the PlayStation 5, and it will greatly depend on a user’s internet connection. Regardless of the device’s flaws, the Portal is well sought-after overseas and the numbers prove that the handheld market is an untapped pool of opportunities.

While Sony intends to offer a tethered handheld experience, Nintendo has perfected the blend between a dedicated handheld and home console through the Switch, a hybrid gaming console. Microsoft is on a similar path, but to a much greater degree, through XCloud. In theory, players can play any of their Xbox games through the cloud and stream games on any device at their disposal with a strong connection. This ambitious idea could transcend the gaming industry further into the future and remove the hurdle of carrying an expensive console when they are out and about miles away from their homes.

Portable gaming devices are taking the world by storm with the recent surge of success of PC gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and many more to play triple-A games natively without needing to stream games. It would make sense for Microsoft to offer an option without purchasing a new device until rival companies like Sony unveil the rumored handheld device that could potentially run Xbox games.

Recent reports claim that only a handful of video games will be supported in the early testing phases, and the library will grow larger once this feature is perfected and publicly shared. This could be a massive game-changer for the Xbox brand that could push rivals off the market and assert dominance through the defining feature of Microsoft which has always been convenience.

Sony Should Have Reconsidered Adding More Features to the Portal and Not Be a Complete Accessory to the PS5

Some fans were on the fence to grab a Portal because, without a PS5, it is nothing more than an expensive paperweight. Sony should have created a full-blown PlayStation Vita successor; however, the success of the Portal could convince the company to pursue this handheld dream for future generations. Xbox Cloud Gaming can take the crown from Sony regarding mobile gaming.

Cloud streaming has changed and become more convenient and advanced than when it first started. While most people would be comfortable playing a game natively on a console, playing on a mobile device anywhere with a strong connection is a tempting option for a game. Microsoft saw the potential of cloud streaming and immediately went to work to make this vision a reality.

Players with a rich library of Xbox games will benefit from this feature the most. Taking any game they desire at the palm of their hands is revolutionary. Without a doubt, some kinks and errors will make themselves known and need ironing and polishing, but the idea of playing a video game made for consoles on a mobile device through cloud streaming is nothing short of a miracle.

Microsoft has consistently demonstrated its commitment to pushing the boundaries and revolutionizing the gaming industry through the innovations of cloud streaming technology. Envision a future where the concept of XCloud transcends its current status as a mere aspiration, empowering gamers worldwide to fully embrace this feature and enjoy their favorite games while on the move.
