It’s been more than a decade since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5), and it still stands as one of the top-selling games in the industry. The game still manages to hold up on its own, go toe to toe with the brand-new releases in recent years, and even surpass them in certain ways.
Throughout the entirety of GTA 5‘s storyline, we come across many mysterious and unexplained occurrences, ranging from cryptic messages to strange creatures. These have spawned a range of conspiracy theories that players discuss to this day. However, one of the biggest ones among them has been busted by an ex-Rockstar employee!
GTA 5‘s Mount Chiliad Mystery Explained by Former Rockstar Developer
One of the most hotly debated topics in the Grand Theft Auto universe is the Mount Chiliad mystery. The conspiracy theory behind this one kicked off right after the game’s release a decade ago.
Players noticed that the tallest point in the game, Mount Chiliad, had a map with weird alien symbols on it. Everyone spent years trying to understand what it meant and couldn’t figure out anything. However, it seems like it wasn’t that deep after all.
In a recent interview with GTAVIClock, an ex-Rockstar developer, Ben Hinchliffe, opened up about several topics, including the development of Grand Theft Auto 5. When he was inquired about the easter egg, Hinchliffe stated that it was simply to mess with players.
As with all easter eggs, sometimes you just put them in to mess with people. They don’t actually do anything, you just mess with people, drive them a little bit crazy.
Hinchliffe does state that Rockstar had always wanted to include various mysterious and easter gets for the dedicated player base to hunt down. However, the Mount Chiliad mystery wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
While an ex-Rockstar developer has confirmed that this conspiracy was bogus, we’ve seen numerous references in GTA 5‘s files that suggested that Rockaar was working on some kind of Alien invasion DLC for the title. There’s a chance that axed DLC, which Rockstar never revealed, could be linked to the Mount Chilliad mystery.
GTA 6 Will Take Realism to the Next Levels
Not only did Hinchliffe talk about GTA 5, but he also shared his thoughts on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Even though he has left the company, he worked on a number of smash-hits, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, LA Noire, and GTA 6.
Just like all of us, even he can’t wait to experience Rockstar’s next project. He believes that the title would raise the bar for the developer and would feature a level of realism that has never been before in Rockstar’s catalog.
“You only have to look at how every game Rockstar has done has evolved in some way. You could argue that every element of the game moves forward in terms of feeling more realistic and people acting and behaving more realistic as every game is iterated through each cycle… I think [Rockstar] has raised the bar again just like they always do.”
He believes that the next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto franchise will blow everyone away and ship millions of copies. Considering the fact that it’s been a while since he left the company, this is quite exciting, as the game has presumably got even better as time has progressed.
With that said, do you think the ex-Rockstar developer is intentionally covering up the Mound Chiliad mystery in GTA 5? Let us know in the comments below.
