The Alabama Fire College, responsible for facilitating firefighter training and certification, interviewed members of Decatur Fire & Rescue’s recruit class on Monday after the class was abruptly sent home last week, according to DFR Chief Tracy Thornton.
“The group from the Alabama Fire College personnel had a lengthy private meeting before they started one-on-one interviews with recruits from the class,” said Thornton in a statement first reported by WAFF 48.
“After the interview process has been completed, the Alabama Fire College will meet with the department leadership. They are being very thorough with this process to ensure they have the most accurate information possible. As Chief, I have not been informed yet of the specific allegation.”
The class was sent home early on Friday. On Monday afternoon, Thornton said he was still waiting to meet with Fire College representatives, who were busy with recruits, to learn of the apparent allegation.
Twenty-one new recruits began training on Sept. 3, according to DFR.
