Mazda is recalling 77K vehicles: Here’s what to know

Mazda is recalling nearly 77,000 of its vehicles due to a software error that impacts the airbags.

The recall affects 2016-2023 MX-5 Miata vehicles. According to an announcement from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the software error causes airbags to deploy with extra force, NJ.com reported.

According to the NTSB, the error could result in air bags deploying at a higher force even during a minor crash or collision. If occupants are not using a seat belt, it could increase the risk of air bag injuries, NTSB said in its announcement.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Mazda dealer where the SAS control module will be reset. The repair will be performed free of charge to vehicle owners.

Car owners with more questions can call Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.nhtsa.gov to receive more information about the recall.
