Mel Kiper Jr. compares Alabama’s Jalen Milroe to NFL star: ‘Vying for QB1 in this draft’

What seemed like a longshot not long ago has now become a major talking point in NFL Draft circles.

Jalen Milroe as the top selected quarterback in the NFL Draft is not so far-fetched anymore.

He accounted for four touchdowns in Alabama’s 41-34 win over Georgia, while completing 27 of 33 passes and throwing two touchdowns. He also ran for 117 yards on 16 carries and two more scores.

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown crew was all about Milroe.

Now, so is NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper.

“(He’s) vying for QB1 in this draft,” Kiper told ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on “Get Up”.

Kiper has grouped the Alabama quarterback among a strong list of contenders for the top quarterback selected in this year’s draft: Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, Georgia’s Carson Beck, and Texas’ Quinn Ewers.

“You see the progression,” Kiper explained. “He’s always been a good deep ball thrower. Great dee-ball accuracy. The progression has been the short, intermediate, precise, accurate passing.”

He added Milroe has improved in the details.

“Jalen Milroe, to me, right now, is in the mix to be certainly QB1 and be a top-10 pick overall. Maybe even higher than that.”

The NFL comparison right now, he said, is Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson.

“He runs as fast as he needs to,” Kiper said of Milroe. “He runs faster than everybody. He makes the position, the most difficult to play in sports, look easy at times.”
