CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The Valley shows its generosity year-round, and that is especially true around Christmas. One organization is seeing an increased need and believes you can make a big difference this season.
Operation Blessing. It’s a name that says it all. The mission is providing food to families every month and toys for Christmas.
“I just want every child to wake up on Christmas, regardless of their situation, and have toys that they know Santa provided,” said Lynette Fumi, a spokesperson for Operation Blessing.
Operation Blessing has been the work of some Canfield churches since 1986. It serves people living in Mahoning County. Toyland brightened Christmas for 79 children 10 years ago. Last year, it provided gifts to 309.
“What we’re noticing for sure is that the number of families and children is increasing, and our donations are decreasing,” Fumi said.
Toyland has some toys but not enough for the expected need next month. You can help with a donation or buy a toy on its Amazon wish list. It’s open and willing to take anything, except stuffed animals. Operation Blessing also provides a blanket every year.
“You know, it’s an amazing thing when you have the ability to help others. And I think we all have very giving hearts here and all of our volunteers,” Fumi said.
Operation Blessing also includes a food distribution once a month. Ninety cars are the norm. Operation Blessing is a year-round way to help others.
“You know, it’s just a good feeling. A lot of people are so appreciative when the food’s put in their car. You know, they’ll grab your hand and say, ‘Hey, I just really appreciate it.’ I’ve had people call, you know, and say just what a help it’s been to their families,” said Barb Ivy, a spokesperson for Operation Blessing.
The toy distribution is December 19, and there are still two weeks to donate toys or money. You can find Operation Blessing’s wish list on Amazon or you can send donations to Canfield Operation Blessing, P.O. Box 652, Canfield, Ohio 44406 (mark in the memo if you want the donation to go to toys or food.)
