Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers for Dandadan episode 6
Doesn’t it feel irritating when you lose your b*lls and some random youkai picks them up from the road? I had a horrid dream about Dandadan losing its touch after the fifth episode and it has haunted me since, wondering if five episodes were really all that the series could offer in terms of quality. Much to my luck, that wasn’t the case. Aira reminds me of a girl who is so far deluded by her own illusionary reality that she makes up a world in her own rose-colored glasses.
Dandadan episode 6 quite literally brings out the rose-colored lens in its game, showing the world from Aira’s perspective and how self-centered she really is. The episode starts with Momo, Turbo Granny, and Okarun looking for the latter’s family jewels that have ironically turned into gold balls. Normally, every being is seeking the power and money even one of them provides.
Dandadan Episode 6 is a Scavenger Hunt
The heavy reliance on irony makes it obvious that Dandadan as an anime doesn’t make humor an obvious tool in between otherwise deeper scenes. The 6th episode brought irony into the picture, using the golden rule of writing and making the level of comedy much greater. Aira’s attitude is something I would have to get used to, especially because of how deluded she is, stuck in her own self-centered world. The consequences of her actions matter naught as long as she gets the attention.
Such an attitude makes her the heartthrob to some and a pain to others. She reminded me a lot of Kikyō Kushida in Classroom of the Elite with her superiority complex and with how she retaliated to Momo’s attack. I personally found it interesting how in classic high-school fashion, Momo and Okarun learn of each other’s romantic eligibilities through others’ prying. With how invasive students can be, thoughts, however absurd they may seem, do tend to sprout in one’s head as an uninvited guest.
Okarun experiences the same by seeing Momo in a completely new light, one that paints her not just as his friend but as a cute girl. In the midst of it all, Aira is having her own arc, mistaking Momo for a demon and wanting to exorcise her.
She came across one of the golden balls and because of how much power is stored within them, her own spiritual powers were awakened by it. As a result, she sees a woman whom she assumes to be Momo’s familiar. The series goes from looking for the family jewels to looking for the dangerous woman, making it a roving hunt.
Of Rose and Love
Dandadan has shown in its previous five episodes that the colors in the anime aren’t random. The fight sequences take things up a notch, adding a lens of colors or taking them away completely. The latest episode let Momo shine as the solo protagonist with Okarun being eaten by the Youkai that had been following Aira for a decade. While Aira thinks the world revolves around her because she is too pretty, the Youkai thinks itself to be her mother because that was the only form of love she ever received.
The tint of pink, or rose, per se, put an obvious touch to how both of them were bound unknowingly by their distorted realities. One is succumbing to her need to find a child while the other cannot see beyond how much attention she gains. Their distorted imagery comes into play with the actual lens the audience sees the story, making the action sequence ten times more interesting. Okarun may be getting a better hang of Turbo Granny’s powers but it is Momo who leads the series and she shows it without a second doubt.
I had noticed it the first time Turbo Granny showed up in the form of a Come-Come Cat, as they are also known as Fortune cats. Not only are they put in stores to attract customers but they are also known for bringing good luck and good fortune. For a manga and anime that has kept every detail with meaning, the powerful Youkai’s new form wasn’t something that could go to waste either.
To my satisfaction, she too brings luck to the duo. The Cross that Aira had been planning to use on Momo turned out to be a lighter and to all the coincidences that could occur, Acrobatic Silky, who has no inflammable component inside her body, happened to eat her own hair while swallowing Momo. From suggestively showing the golden balls to Aira and the Youkai being humbled by what they are most proud of, the latest Dandadan episode was certainly something many would be happy with.
