Quentin Tarantino has been pretty vocal about his retirement plans. The director has been expected to retire after his tenth film, which he is currently working on. However, Ridley Scott had some choice words to say about the Inglorious Basterds director.
Quentin Tarantino’s last film was expected to be The Movie Critic, which was set to star Brad Pitt. However, the film seems to be in the process of being reworked, leaving fans wondering what the auteur’s alleged final offering is going to be. Ridley Scott, though, thinks that Scorsese might be on the wrong track with his trajectory.
Ridley Scott thinks Quentin Tarantino should keep making films
Ridley Scott will be coming out with his latest film, Gladiator II on 15th November, which would be the latest entry in a long line of films that the director has been making since the 70s. To begin with, the director refuses to believe that Tarantino will retire after his tenth film. When the issue was discussed further, he said:
Exactly. I don’t fucking believe that bullshit. Shut up and go make another movie. Quentin wrote a few things for my brother. They got along great. I’m not sure I’ve met him.
Tarantino’s films have received a lot of praise from fans and critics alike, leading to the making of some Hollywood Classics like Inglourious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Django Unchained. Currently, the director is 61. To put that into context, Ridley Scott did not make his seminal film Gladiator until he was 63. While Tarantino has been very vocal about his retirement and his interest in focusing on literature, there are a lot of fans who believe that the director might just love films too much to shake them off.
Tarantino’s 10th Film might not necessarily be his last
Quentin Tarantino has been very vocal about his terms of retirement, saying that he would rather have the audience wanting more from him instead of begging him to stop making films.
However, Tarantino has also been very clear about what could pull, him back into filmmaking with his 10th film. Speaking with Deadline, he said:
I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more. I do think directing is a young man’s game, and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie. I’m not trying to ridicule anyone who thinks differently, but I want to go out while I’m still hard. … I like that I will leave a 10-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this.
It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan. If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don’t screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career. If, later on, I come across a good movie, I won’t not do it just because I said I wouldn’t. But 10 and done, leaving them wanting more — that sounds right.
If presented with a great story, Tarantino will not hesitate to put his director’s hat back on, which is something that Ridley Scott echoes in his recent interview. Scott is confident that Tarantino is not going to be able to retire after his tenth film, given how successful his films are, and how believed he is among his fans.
