England 20 South Africa 29: Red Rose edged out again as Springboks inflict fifth straight defeat

But  Grant Williams, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Cheslin Kolbe notched well-worked scores to help put the Springboks 19-10 up.

Sam Underhill ran a great line to touch down for the Red Rose before the interval.

Both sides then had a try scrubbed out in a frantic start to the second period.

England edged ahead with a penalty but Handre Pollard’s huge kick overturned that.

And when Damian de Allende ploughed beyond Ben Earl and Henry Slade, Kolbe streaked away for his second try.

England piled on the pressure after that – but the Boks looked strong, save for two strong pushes near the line.

Cobus Reinach finally booted the ball into touch to signal defeat for Steve Borthwick’s men.

And despite England’s emerging potential, they are still comfortably short of the world champions.
