Five savvy ways to avoid needless expenses when buying your tree this Christmas

THERE are some great ways to save money on your Christmas tree, if you are already pining to put it up.

From choosing a smaller one but propping it up on a stand, to seeking out deals, or considering an alternative form of home decoration, your bill can be trimmed right back.

Here are some tips . . .

SIZE IS NOT EVERYTHING: One easy way to save is to maybe resist the urge for that huge, hulking tree this year. Picking a 3ft or 4ft one will work out a lot cheaper.

You can then give it some extra height by placing it on a box, small table or empty hamper basket. Buy a real tree — or check out the new range of ready-lit artificial ones at Asda where a 4ft one is £15.

SPRUCE UP THE OLD ONE: Already have an artificial tree? Give it a fresh look instead of buying a new one. A quick spray of glitter or snow can revive it with a wintry look. Grab cans of snow spray for just £2.50 at thechristmas shop.co.uk, and get creative on a budget.

SECONDHAND SAVING: Why not choose pre-loved this year? Snap up a secondhand artificial tree for huge savings.

Ebay.co.uk has some incredible deals — think 6ft pre-lit trees for as little as £7.50. Also search online at Facebook Marketplace and NextDoor for local bargains that will save on delivery costs.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL: If you do want to invest in a new artificial tree this year, Argos has 25 per cent off selected trees and lights. Its cheapest 6ft Christmas tree is £16.75.

Meanwhile at Robert Dyas, get up to £30 off selected trees. The huge 7ft Victoria Pine was £89.99, now £59.99. Or head to The Range for the 7ft Norway Spruce — it was £39.99, but now is just £23.99.

BRANCH OUT: If you are open to an alternative look, consider skipping the tree entirely and decorating a foraged branch or potted plant instead.

A large branch decked out with fairy lights, ornaments, and a bit of glitter spray can add a unique Christmas feel to your home without the cost of a full tree.
