SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) — The Salem Fire Department is urging people to stay away from downtown after a partial building collapse in the area Sunday afternoon.
It happened on State Street around 2 p.m. Photos from the department show the roof and back of the building have caved in. No one was hurt.
Salem Fire Chief Scott Mason said the building was scheduled to be demolished next week, and crews were already working on it to prepare for demolition.
“I notified the contractor of the situation. He’s here and bringing equipment, and we’re going to try to get the building down tonight or first thing in the morning,” Mason said.
All the utilities for the building were shut off. The department says to avoid downtown and State Street as the building is currently not safe to be around.
