I turned the dead space on top of my stairs into a home office using B&Q and IKEA buys – people say it’s genius

MANY people wish they had an extra room or two in their home for an office, playroom or a home gym.

However, one savvy woman showed how she solved the issue in her house by transforming the dead space on top of her stairs into a working area.

A woman shared how she didn't like her home having dead space above her stairs

Emily McAllister, who posts under @emilymcallister19, showed her simple yet effective DIY project that gave her a whole other area of her home to enjoy.

She previously had stairs that spiralled down to her front door, but took up a huge part of her hallway.

Instead, she got builders to add a platform along her hallway, and have her stairs going straight down to save space.

Emily wrote: “Swipe to build our home office.

“Obsessed with our little office!!! Proof that no space is too small to be useful.”

She finished off her “perfect office area” with some bargain buys.

First Emily bought a B&Q desk in a natural oak colour, which room for her keyboard and monitor.

Next she bought an Ikea MULLFJÄLLET desk chair and a carpet from Tapi to finish off the look.

Not only did the transformation look good, but it may have added value onto her home too.

According to Octagon Capital, on average adding a home office to your house can increase the sale on price of your house by five to 10 per cent.

People were amazed at the transformation and were quick to praise her space-saving idea.

One said: “This is such clever use of space.”

A second added: “This is such a creative way to use wasted space! Love it.”

However, some people had some concerns.

One wrote: “I’d roll back when I’m fuming about something and I’d go flying down the stairs.”

Another agreed, saying: “I’d have to put a speed bump along the carpet to stop me rolling down the stairs.”

Home upgrades that add the most value to a house

The best renovation to add value totally depends on your property, the local market and your potential buyers.

Zoopla shared a list of upgrades that will instantly add value to your home.

  1. Loft conversion – increase of 15%
  2. Off-street parking – adds £50,000 to property price
  3. New kitchen – increase of 15%
  4. Garage conversion – increase of 15%
  5. Cellar or basement conversion – increase of 10-15%
  6. Open plan living space – increase of 3-5%
  7. New bathroom – increase of 3-5%

Emily replied: “We’ve been working here about 2/3 months now and that hasn’t happened so I think we’re good haha!

“It’s about 2M long so not much chance of falling off!”

Another person queried: “Has it not made the staircase super dark though if the light is blocked out?

“I think it’s a really cool idea though!”

Emily answered: “Our front door has glass in so let’s in a lot of light and the window above is huge so let’s in so much light!”
