Good Food Guide names the best Sunday Roast restaurants in Scotland

There were 50 entries in total, with four Scottish restaurants making the cut.

The Loveable Rogue West End

333 Great Western Road, Glasgow

One of two Glasgow restaurants to make the list was the Loveable Rogue.

While the team also operates in the East End and Southside of the city, it was the original Great Western Road venue that earned them their spot.

The Good Food Guide said: “Expect comfort food in the shape of rare, ‘butter-soft’ Speyside beef, gigantic Yorkshires, garlicky roast potatoes cooked in beef fat, brisket mac ‘n’ cheese, honeyed roots, crushed vegetables and lashings of red-wine gravy.”

Following the announcement, co-owner Amalia Lazzerini said: “Our team is overjoyed to be included in The Good Food Guides’ inaugural Sunday Roast rankings.

“The Rogue Roast is one of our best-selling dishes at all of our neighbourhood locations, and guests return week after week to enjoy the mighty feast.

“This ranking is a testament to our head chef Joe and all our team who deliver great food and top class service to customers day after day and to be acknowledged for the hard work and consistency with our Sunday Roast is a real achievement for us all”. 

Hawksmoor Edinburgh

23 West Register Street, Edinburgh

“Like its siblings in London, Manchester and Liverpool, this branch of the Hawksmoor steakhouse group shows off flavoursome cuts of dry-aged native beef at its hugely popular Sunday lunch, when a whole rump is slow-cooked over charcoal, then finished in the oven,” the Good Food Guide said of the only Edinburgh restaurant to make the list.

Located in a former National Bank of Scotland’s Banking Hall, at Hawksmoor Sunday Lunch is served with all the trimmings including crispy beef dripping potatoes, buttered greens, carrots, fluffy Yorkshire puddings and cauliflower cheese.

The Coorie Inn

6 Willoughby Street, Muthill

Noting the Coorie Inn’s dedication to using locally sourced produce, the Good Food Guide said: “Formerly Barley Bree, this reinvigorated 18th-century coaching inn is earning plenty of plaudits, especially when it comes to Sunday lunch.

“The vibe is cosy, friendly staff seldom miss a beat, and the food is as local as possible.”

Taking to social media to thank their customers for helping them to secure the accolade, the team at The Coorie Inn said: “A massive thank you to all of those who continue to support us here at Coorie Inn, Sunday Roast is one of our busiest days in the restaurant and we put immense effort into what we serve.

“The atmosphere here on a Sunday is buzzing and we love having a full house for the delicious roast.”

Porter & Rye

1131 Argyle Street, Glasgow

Earlier this year, The Herald reported that this restaurant in Glasgow’s West End was the only Scottish entry on a list of the World’s Best Steaks.

Adding more cause for celebration, The Good Food Guide has praised Porter & Rye for its ‘thick slices of tender meat ingeniously paired with a nugget of melting braised ox cheek’ used for their Sunday Roasts.

“We are over the moon to announce that we have made the top 50 of the Good Food Guide best Sunday Roast,” Porter & Rye responded.

“This means so much to us.

“Huge thanks to our amazing customers for reviewing and recommending us to be assessed for the list.”
