BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are investigating after a man’s sex offender status was used to scam him out of $1,500.
Last Wednesday, the man called police to report what he believed to be a scam.
He told an officer that the scammer called his employer and left a message, asking him to call back. When he returned the call, he spoke with a man who identified himself as a detective. The caller told the man that registry requirements for sex offenders had changed and that he needed to resubmit a DNA sample, so he was not in compliance with the new requirements.
The caller told the man he needed to pay $1,500 in bond or he would be jailed. He then instructed the man to go to his bank, withdraw the cash, and then take it to the Bitcoin kiosk inside Tobacco City, where he was told to deposit the cash using a QR code and account numbers provided by the caller.
The victim told police that he believed he may have been scammed after talking to his wife.
He told police that the scammer spoke with an accent and said “10-4” a lot.
