Suicide survivors ceremony planned to honor lives lost

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A solemn observance is planned this weekend to honor those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Duane Piccirilli of the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board spoke with commissioners Thursday morning, telling them about a ceremony to be held on Saturday marking “International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.”

Piccirilli says the county recorded more than 50 suicides last year. He told commissioners that those who have suffered a loss need to know there is a place they can go for comfort.

“We have a quiet place for people to go and reflect but also it not only be for survivors of suicide, but for someone that may have lost a child or somebody that may have lost someone to a drug overdose — just a quiet place to go,” Piccirilli said.

Saturday’s event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the community Campus of Care on County Line Road in Austintown.
