How to get your home ready for the winter

How to get your home ready for the winter

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — With the drop in temperatures, comes an increase in the number of people cranking up the heat for the first time since last winter.

Todd Little, with Hiller Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical, told News 19 a common thing they hear this time of year is “I smell burning in my home.”

Little said a burning smell is common when people first crank up their heating system and it’s due to dust burning off the parts. He said it’s usually nothing to worry about.

“If it lasts for longer than probably five to 10 minutes, then you probably need to get it checked,” Little said.

He said the best way to avoid being left in the cold is to get a tune-up before the temperatures really take a dip.

“If something’s going wrong sometimes we can catch it before it happens,” Little added.

Experts also remind you not to let the nice warm air that you’re paying for go right out your windows or front door. They say it’s a good time to ensure your windows and doors have the proper weather stripping.

One way you can check this yourself is to grab a dollar bill or a piece of paper. Wedge the paper in the door and close it. If you can pull the paper through the closed door, it is likely time to upgrade your weather stripping.

Your air ducts are also a spot where you could be seeing air leakage.

Little told News 19 that they have a service where they can test your vents for leaks. He said it helps customers “keep your heat in your home instead of going outside.”

Replacing your air filter is another way to keep your system in tip-top shape. Little recommends replacing it every few months.

“I would keep a check on it, especially if you have pets in the home,” he added.
