Hall of Fame Grissom High School football coach passes away

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Grissom High School’s first football coach has died at the age of 93.

Valhalla Funeral Home announced that Lawrence “Larrie” Evans Robinson died on Friday, Nov. 22 at the age of 93. Coach Larrie was born on May 17, 1931.

According to the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame (HMCAHOF), Robinson became Grissom’s first football head coach in when the school opened in 1969.

He was inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

Robinson’s biography for the Hall of Fame says that under Robinson, Grissom became one of the best teams in Alabama, consistently making it into the state playoffs and once going all the way to the state championship game.

After a four-year career in the U.S. Navy, Robinson received his bachelor’s degree at Florence State (now North Alabama) and then joined John Meadows at cross-town Butler High School as an assistant football coach.

As the athletic director at Grissom, Robinson led one of the top overall sports programs in the state. The Tigers eventually won championships in nearly every sport, including basketball, baseball, soccer, track, volleyball and swimming under Robinson.

According to the funeral home, his celebration of life will be on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel.
