McTominay helped Gli Azzurri return to the top of the table with a 1-0win over Roma tonight.

And the 27-year-old has come in for big praise from a Serie A hero who was a long-time rival of Napoli.

McTominay had previously been credited with forcing manager Antonio Conte into changing his system, with the former Chelsea coach saying: “Scott is a player who has goals in his blood.”

And now Hernanes, a Brazilian who spent seven years in Italy playing for Lazio, Inter and Juventus, has become the latest to man to talk up the Scot in an interview with sportitalia.

Asked about his favourite midfielder in Serie A, Hernanes said: “The Napoli one, McTominay – I saw him play live and I liked him a lot.

“He is elegant, then he sees the goal, because that’s what he is: the number 8 must know a bit of everything.

“You have to mark, you have to set up the actions, but you have to see the goal and he sees it.

“And as a style of play I like his.

“I also like Nicolo Barella but he’s got a different style, he’s very dynamic, very annoying, he marks very well.

“But I like midfielders more in the style of Teun Koopmeiners and McTominay.”

McTominay is joined in Naples by compatriot Billy Gilmour, who has also been praised, even earning comparisons to Italian football great Andrea Pirlo for one performance.
