A Massive Fear Still Plagues Tom Hanks Everytime He’s Doing a Film Despite His 40-plus Years in Hollywood

Audiences have seen the many faces of Tom Hanks. Having played all kinds of characters over the years, his ability to go from Forrest Gump to Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan is astonishing. Having been a part of the industry for decades, he has reached a level of success that few can even dream of. With this, it is difficult to imagine that anything is out of the actor’s capabilities.

However, when one becomes such a great figure, humanity is often lost in the eyes of its admirers. Although Hanks is known for his ability to master any character, it does not stop him from getting nervous. Even though he has six Oscar nominations and two wins under his belt, the actor confessed that he is still afraid of getting fired from a role.

Imposter Syndrome—Feeling Unqualified or Incompetent For a Role

Imposter syndrome is something that can affect the greatest of the greats. Feeling like you are not deserving of the success that you have, or worse, believing that you can lose it all suddenly because of your own lack of skills, is a feeling that many people know all too well.

However, it seems that many disregard celebrities when they are thinking about it. Tom Hanks is as successful as an actor can get. He has Oscars and money; he is the go-to guy for Steven Spielberg; and he has more than enough greatness to last a lifetime.

Despite this, it would seem that Hanks also suffers from imposter syndrome. The star recently gave an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. Here, he was asked if he was ever afraid that he would get fired from a project. Interestingly enough, his answer was very candid.

Answering the question honestly, Tom Hanks revealed that he feels very nervous when he is filming a project, even though he is one of the most respected actors of all time. He confessed that he always feels a certain dread of people being fired on the second day of filming a project.

He further mentioned that he had a firm belief that if an actor was able to stay on a project past the third day, they were safe. The reason for this was that directors are most likely to realize that an actor doesn’t fit their vision on the second day of filming a project. This makes him constantly worry about being approached by directors, even if it is constructive criticism on the second day.

Happens every day on day two. Day two of shooting the movie. There’s a joke that if you make it past day three, you’re safe. Cause here’s what can happen, you know, they can come to you and say okay, first day was great, we looked at the daily’s, we need to talk.

Due to this, Hanks confessed that he is not nervous about filming a project before he gets on set. He only holds his breath when he is on the second day.
