‘Absolutely bizarre’ – Scots football fans left stunned after Prem club offer fans chance to buy ‘digital piece of turf’

STEPPING out on the grass in the stadium of your boyhood club is a dream for most football fans.

But while only a handful of supporters can make that dream a reality, one Scottish Premiership club have given their fans the next best thing – or so they had thought.

Dundee United have left footie fans baffled with their latest announcement, revealing punters can own a piece of the Tannadice turf – but in digital form.

The club have revealed an unusual partnership with Sportli – a unique digital platform – so fans can have the opportunity to own a virtual section of the turf at their home stadium.

Each virtual area represents a real-life segment of the stadium and fans who make a purchase will own the virtual piece of land for 12 months.

It will cost them £29.99, and they will be given an immediate e-certificate and framed certificate to prove their ownership.

Dundee United aren’t the only club to team up with Sportli as Championship outfit Livingston have also created a partnership with the platform.

Scotland fans can also purchase a section of Hampden Park for the same price too.

Dundee United heroes Sean Dillon and John Hold helped launched the partnership and they both believe it’s an exciting and innovative idea to connect fans with the club.

But for some supporters reacting on social media, they might need a bit more convincing as many have branded it a “bizarre” partnership and plan.

One fan wrote: “This might just be a bit too far, guys. Absolutely bizarre.”

Another United supporter said: “This might be one of the most bizarre things we have done, and that’s saying something.”

A third agreed: “The most bizarre league in the world.”

While someone else commented: “This is absolutely mental.”

Speaking at the launch, Dillon told the Dundee United website: “Sportli is a brilliant idea. It enhances the connection with the supporters massively and allows them to feel part of the action here at the stadium!”

Holt added, “I genuinely think this product is great for Dundee United fans. I’m glad to see we are the first Premiership club to seize on this initiative, and it means supporters around the world can feel that sense of ownership”.

Gordon Stevenson, Sportli founder, commented: “Owning a virtual patch of Tannadice is more than just a novelty — it’s about connecting fans to the heart of local football in Dundee.

“This platform allows supporters to feel a deeper connection to the pitch where so many unforgettable moments have happened. It’s a way for fans to show their passion and be part of the legacy of Dundee United.

“With Sportli.org, we’re giving fans a unique chance to claim their own piece of football history, bringing them closer to the game they love and helping to support our clubs for future generations.”

Mark Cunningham, head of commercial and sponsorship, added, “We are excited to collaborate with Sportli on this pioneering project!

“Not only does this enhance our fan engagement, but also it allows supporters to become a part of the club’s story in a new and innovative way.”
