ACS updates lung cancer screening guidelines for high risk adults

(WKBN) — The earlier you catch lung cancer, the better and the American Cancer Society has updated its cancer screening guidelines.

The American Cancer Society updated its screening guidelines for lung cancer last year for adults at high risk of getting it.

They recommend yearly screening for people aged 50 to 80 who smoke or used to smoke and have at least a 20-pack-year history of smoking. That could be smoking a pack a day for 20 years or smoking two packs a day for 10 years.

“Well, early detection is paramount, because the earlier we can diagnose cancer, hopefully the earlier we can get treatment involved, and it’s easier to treat if we detect it early,” said nurse practitioner Bridget Nance.

November is lung cancer awareness month. It’s the leading cause of cancer deaths nationwide.
