Actor, singer who co-wrote legendary classics dead at 78

JD Souther, the singer, songwriter and actor, died Tuesday at the age of 78.

No cause of death was given, but reps at Solters PR said he died peacefully at his home in New Mexico, according to Variety.

Souther was scheduled for concert dates this fall, per the report, and had performed as recently as five days ago.

Souther, an inductee to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, wrote and recorded songs with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. Souther had two major hits as a solo artist: “You’re Only Lonely” and “Her Town Too,” a duet released with his friend James Taylor.

He co-wrote some of the biggest hits of the Eagles, like “New Kid in Town” and “Best of My Love,” and had a long solo career that included the top 10 hit “You’re Only Lonely.”

  • “Heartache Tonight”
  • “Victim of Love”
  • “James Dean”
  • “Doolin-Dalton”
  • “The Sad Cafe”
  • “You Never Cry Like a Lover”
  • “Teenage Jail”
  • “Last Good Time in Town.”

He also co-wrote “The Heart of the Matter” with Don Henley.

Souther, the actor, found success in television and movies, with credits that include 1989′s “Thirtysomething” as well as a role in 2012′s “Nashville.” He had smaller roles in movies like “Postcards From the Edge,” “Always,” “Deadline” and “My Girl 2.”

Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
