Agatha Star Kathryn Hahn’s Riskiest Role Would Have Been a Lot More Difficult That Went Beyond X-Rated at Times

Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn has been in a handful of brilliant movies and TV series, but she has hardly gotten the recognition she truly deserved. Having played supporting roles in several films, the actress has built up quite an impressive filmography, spread across different genres, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Apart from playing the supportive assistant in the iconic rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or the drug-induced Bad Moms, Hahn had one of her most risky roles on HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher. More than just an X-rated miniseries, it would have turned out to be a lot more difficult if it wasn’t for one thing— intimacy coordinators.

Kathryn Hahn has been in several movies and series, often in supporting roles aiding the tale from the sidelines. Despite being in such roles, the actress has managed to show off her impeccable acting chops and effortlessly transformed into any character that catches her fancy.

But one of her boldest roles has been on HBO’s miniseries, Mrs. Fletcher. A comedy series based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, it stars Hahn as a divorcee undergoing a mid-life crisis as her son leaves for college and she starts experiencing a s*xual reawakening. A risky and often NSFW role, Hahn had a fun time exploring the character and her many ‘difficult’ quirks.

However, the role might have turned even more difficult had it not been for the intimacy coordinators, a must for HBO, and the show’s directors being all female. While talking to The Guardian about her experience, the Agatha All Along star remarked,

Of course you’re going to be nervous, but at least I felt heard and safe.

Fortunately for Kathryn Hahn, despite the challenges of the role, the experience turned out to be better than one could have expected. Not only did Hahn managed to garner sympathy for her portrayal but also did one hell of a job playing a divorcee ‘rediscovering’ the ‘pleasures’ of life.

Kathryn Hahn’s Mrs. Fletcher is not for beginners for it contains several mature themes and scenes as Eve Fletcher tried to navigate through her new-found purposelessness in life and grappling sense of ‘hunger’ for intimacy.

Yet, being the talented actress she is, Hahn manages to play the character as convincingly as possible without appearing ‘cringe’, even making the audience relate to her. While talking to The Guardian, she revealed her approach towards the role,

I responded to her sense of hunger. That overwhelming sense of existential loneliness for this woman who had given so much of herself. She tried to play by the rules, did everything she was asked, tried to be the good girl her whole life. Then finally she was left with ‘What now?’

While her approach helped her in her portrayal, Hahn was also sad about how her character never really had the chance to ‘explore’ or was allowed to do the things she wanted.

Diving along into Pandora’s box, the actress ultimately feels the theme of the series was more enlightening than entertaining, for it not only sheds light on how women are kept away from ‘learning’ about themselves but also how so much of our perceptions on ‘women’ and themes like ‘s*x’ are based on the gold mine called the Internet.

Mrs. Fletcher is available to stream on Prime Video.
