An ammonia spill at a dairy supplier in Suffield on Wednesday led to evacuations of the business and nearby homes and businesses, as well the partial closure of Route 159.
The chemical spill was reported in the early morning hours at HP Hood, leading to Route 159 being closed between Suffield Street and the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, according to the state Department of Transportation and the Suffield Police Department.
Hazmat crews, including those from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, responded to the scene. HP Hood was evacuated as well as some nearby businesses and homes.
Suffield police said in a statement that “there is no immediate hazard to the public at this time.”
DOT officials did not have an estimate as to how long Route 159 would be closed.
